Mundo Hispano

Salt Lake City, Utah

Gladys Gonzalez and Sandra Plazas

Bridging the Gap Between the Hispanic and American Community

In 1993, Gladys Gonzalez saw the need for a bridge of integration between the Hispanic and the non-Hispanic communities. She knew the Hispanic community needed a source of news on current events in their native language and thought the non-Hispanic community would benefit from interesting information about the Hispanic culture now thriving in the region. Along with her daughter Sandra Plazas , she decided to respond to this need by publishing a bi-lingual Spanish newspaper, Mundo Hispano.

Hard work is no stranger to these single mothers. In the beginning, Gladys and Sandra did it all. They were the writers, editors, designers and deliverers of the paper. Three thousand copies were printed every two weeks. Initial operations were funded with money they saved from working other jobs.

"Don't give up.  You can make it possible when you have an organization like the UMLF in your corner to help you get where you want to go."

Gladys Gonzolez

In 1997, a $10,000 Utah microenterprise loan enabled Mundo Hispanoto move from a monthly publication to a weekly publication. The fact that their circulation is audited by the Circulation Verification Council sets the newspaper apart from any other Hispanic printed media in Utah . After successfully paying off their first loan, a second $10,000 loan in May 2003 enabled Mundo Hispano to launch a soccer supplement for their newspaper.

Mundo HIspano has offices located at 9131 South Monroe St. , Suite C in Midvale, Utah . The paper strives to be a reliable forum for the political and life issues faced by the growing Latino population. It is a premier source of information on local, state, national, international and sports news with a unique cultural flavor not available anywhere else in the local media. The paper is now printed in color with a circulation of over 10,000 copies each week.

You can reach Mundo HIspano at (801) 569-3338 or via e-mail at Sandra@mundohispano.com . You can also visit their web site at www.munhispano.com . Look for a copy of Mundo Hispano at Smith's, Wal-Mart or any Hispanic super market and see how the Utah Microenterprise Loan Fund helped make Gladys and Sandra's newspaper dreams a reality.
